			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Ground source heat pumps offer a reasonably affordable and eco friendly approach to use spare heat from the ground for heating and cooling both housing and industrial buildings. Preliminary set-up costs can be a reasonable amount higher than standard air-source systems, but geothermal heat pumps provide substantially lessen ownership costs over the long run. Ground source heat pumps (GSHPs) are systems that use the earth?s heat to give heating, cooling and hot water for commercial organisations and residential buildings. The systems are fashioned to take advantage of the fact that temperatures stay at a near constant level of between 7 C and 21 C just a few feet under the ground, irrespective of geographic location or surface air temperatures. Throughout winter, the systems essentially draw out heat from the ground and transfer it to a commercial building or home, whilst in summer the systems draw out heat from building interiors and shift it to the ground. Ground source heat pumps are electrically powered and are often referred to as geothermal heat pumps, or geo-exchange pumps, or simply as earth-coupled heat pumps. A full-fledged GSHP unit consists of a heat pump, a ground loop system for taking in heat from the ground or rejecting it back to the earth, and air ducts or radiant floor systems for providing the hot or cold air. The ground loop system generally consists of many loops of plastic tubing filled up with antifreeze liquid or water, hidden underground in horizontal or vertical way. During winter, the liquid in the loops gathers heat from the ground and shoves it to the heat pump where a compressor lifts the temperature even more before circulating it throughout the building. The stream of the liquid inside the loops is reversed during summer. This results in the warmer air being taken out from the building and moved to the earth while cooler liquid is circulated back to the heat pump and then all the way through the building. An open loop system performs in pretty much the same way, but in such cases the liquid in the loops is usually ejected into the ground. Ground source heat pumps have been utilised since the 1940s and are thought to be a more environmentally-friendly and cost-effective option to standard air-transfer based heating and cooling systems. Research have demonstrated that GSHP systems have heating efficiencies up to 70% higher than conventional systems and cooling efficiencies of nearly 40% more than air-conditioners. The initial cost of setting up a geothermal heat pump can be quite high compared to regular heating and cooling systems. However, over the long term the pumps are less expensive to own and to maintain. They also can supply up to 50% savings on energy usage. <p>The kitchen, with all its appliances, gadgets and heat, is a real hotspot for potential energy saving. As the oven uses the most energy and creates a vast amount of heat while cooking foods, it is a good place to start. </p>
<p> For instance, when baking cookies use two trays. While one is in the oven baking, the other one is prepped with raw cookies &#8211; ready to replace the tray in the oven with no wasted heat and some time saved. When we bake bread we also fill the oven with foil wrapped potatoes. The potatoes can be stored in the fridge without the foil and used throughout the week in a myriad of recipes, or as a side dish. This method can be applied to a menu plan in that if you are baking one dish, try to include a side dish that is baked as well.</p>
<p>By turning off the oven a minute or two before the dish is done, the residual heat will finish the cooking. When done with the oven, open the door to allow any leftover heat to warm the home. </p>
<p>Pasta cooking water can be left out until it has completely cooled &#8211; so that the heat and moisture are released back into the air. Before pulling the plug, consider leaving hot dishwater (and bath water) until it cools. Why pay to heat up your sewer pipes? When cooking vegetables, consider steaming instead of boiling. When steamed, more nutrients are retained in the food, and because it requires less water to heat &#8211; there is less energy used.</p>
<p>In summer, consider cooking on the barbecue to help keep the house cool. Most barbecues now include side burners that make outdoor cooking all that much easier.<br />All these methods are relatively easy to adopt and when added up, the savings in energy and time really do make a difference.</p>
